Notice that on the back of the circuit board the power connectors look like there could be an 2x8 pin version

375W \o/

I think this is going to be the 5950 and the 5970 will use 2x8 connectors and faster clocks.

Are you sure its not a Fermi in disguise? On second thoughts I guess having the power connectors soldered to the board and facing the same way and not having the fan shroud cover half the interconnects rules it out...

Dual 8-pin will make it 300W TDP
But no, according to this page, device ID 689C makes it Hemlock XT, thus it should be Radeon HD 5970.

BTW, the cooler is the old version.

The official version is here:

2x8pin (150W) + PCI-E (75W) = 375W

1x8pin (150W) + 1x6pin (75W) + PCI-E (75W) = 300W

375W would be enough for the 5970 to be a real 5870X2, most modern power supplies support such loads, heat seems to be manageable so . . .

from the image I would assume at some point they were considering between a downpowered <300W version and a full featured >300W one

I hope the full featured one wins, interesting would be if the 5970 would have slightly higher specs (memory clock?) to make it better performing than 2 5870 in CF

5970 market is small, some higher clocked memory could be used to make the premium buyers happy and enhance the brand's image as top performer

You're right.
The clocks seem slow a bit. Is this an engineer sample or retail?
Maybe Hemlock XTX?(just kidding)

Well, the clocks can always change until the last moment the retail & media review samples are out (But not these *leaked samples*), which is usually a month before launch.
And right now, Hemlock is waiting NVIDIA Fermi to decide its moves.

As for the XTX, it has a possibility, ATI won't do it officially, but then AIBs who wanted to do it will need to equip it with a water block.
And DangerDen has just announced their DD-5870-X2 water block, what a coincidence.
