PowerColor launches 5770 Eyefinity 5 card

But can you afford the displays to go with it?

FOR THOSE OF you that are looking for an affordable card to power five displays, look no further, as PowerColor has announced its new Eyefinity5 HD5770 graphics card which as the name suggests, will handle five displays, unlike the Eyefinity 6 cards which work with six.

Although the new 5770 card from PowerColor is targeting gamers, we can see quite a few business users eyeing this card, as it’s a fair bit cheaper than going with specialized multi-screen solutions. We’re not quite sure how useful a 5770 is for a multi-screen scenario mixed with 3D graphics, as the GPU doesn’t quite have the grunt to handle that many high-resolution displays.

A pair of cards in a CrossFire setup might do the trick though, especially as the second card shouldn’t have to be an Eyefinity card. PowerColor doesn’t really seem to have figured out who the card is for either, but suggests that “Gamers can easily make use of this unique feature and have different display configurations to enjoy a wider field of view and get more done at the same time”

It doesn’t seem like PowerColor supplies mini DisplayPort dongles with the card either, so you’re on your own when it comes to getting these, which isn’t going to be cheap, nor that easy, unless you order them from Apple. It’s an interesting card, but it seems to have a limited appeal due the weaker GPU compared to the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 cards which can cope with a few extra displays better.S|A
