Motorola Atrix 4G launching March 6th

$199.99 for the handset on its own, more with accessories

ALTHOUGH NOT QUITE being what we’d call a 4G phone, the Motorola Atrix 4G with an Nvidia Tegra AP20H dual core SoC and 1GB of RAM has finally been given something of a launch date by AT&T. Full pricing has also been revealed, not only for the handset itself, but also for it bundled with the laptop dock and desktop dock.

For those eager to get their hands on this new Android wonder phone with a 4-inch 960×540 resolution “qHD” display and a host of other high-end smartphone features such as 802.11n Wi-Fi, HDMI 1.3a output and 1080p video recording and playback (ok, so the last two features will be added later via a software update) can put in their pre-orders on the 13th of February. AT&T will have the handset out in the retail channel on or before March 6th, so it’s still about a month’s worth of waiting to be done.

For $199.99 you get the Atrix 4G on its own on a two year contract, but at the time of purchase you can get it with the laptop dock for $499.99 as long as you’re willing to not only send off a $100 mail in rebate, but you’ll also have to sign up for the data pro smartphone data service and the tethering add on, which means a higher monthly bill. The laptop dock on its own will set you back $499.99 and of course doesn’t include the handset.

For those interested in the desktop dock, you can get it alongside with an unspecified Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and a remote control, but apparently no HDMI cable for $189.99 as a special package from AT&T. Not exactly what we’d call cheap, especially as the handset features a built in HDMI port and can be set up to work with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse without the need for the dock. Sure, the dock makes things a bit neater, but the bundle doesn’t seem to be a cracking deal.

We can see the Motorola Atrix 4G gaining quite a lot of popularity if it delivers on its promise. We’re not going to talk about an iPhone killer here, despite a much better overall feature set, as the two devices target fairly different kinds of consumers. The Atrix 4G is likely to steal market from other high-end Android devices though, as it’s currently the most feature packed Android handsets out there, at least until the MWC kicks off in 10 days’ time.S|A
