Acer launches Nvidia HDMI 3D compatible monitor

Has built in IR transmitter

TO DATE MOST, if not all 3D computer displays have relied on  dual-link DVI connectivity to display the 3D image, but Acer has announced a new model in its line-up called the GN245HQ which will offer 3D Vision support over HDMI, a first for a computer monitor. Acer has also cleverly embedded the IR emitter into the screen bezel which means that the problem of position the USB IR emitter that Nvidia supplies with its 3D glasses is no longer an issue.

The panel in the GN245HQ is an LED backlit 23.6-inch TN unit with 1920×1080 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, a 2ms response time, 100 million to one dynamic contrast ratio and a brightness of 300 candela per square meter. Besides the HDMI port, it also sports a dual-link DVI port and a D-sub connector. It also has a pair of built in 2W speakers and it, of course, has a USB port for the built in IR emitter. Finally it’s supplied with a pair of 3D Vision glasses, but additional glasses can be used.

Acer is expecting the new screen to hit retail sometime in March with a UK suggested retail price of £419.99 inc VAT (or roughly $675), but we’d expect it to retail for around $499 plus tax if Acer decides to launch it in the US. We’re still not sold on the whole 3D thing, but at least Acer has managed to come up with a display that solves one of the issues of 3D displays by integrating the IR emitter, which is a small step in the right direction, at least for those that are keen on using the technology.S|A
