Marvell does all-in-one-modem

Lower cost, better integration and better coverage for the end user.

Marvell (NASDAQ:MRVL) has just announced its latest wireless modem the PXA1801 that integrate a host of wireless standards including FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, HSPA+, TD-SCDMA and EDGE in a single chip.

According to Marvell this is the first chip supporting all these standards.

“I envision a time soon when a truly affordable global communications network helps to bring our world closer as consumers from every walk of life enjoy uninterrupted access to all services, applications and the worldwide cloud from any device they choose anywhere they roam,” Weili Dai, Marvell’s co-founder said.

Basically it will allow manufacturers of smartphones to reduce the number of components as well as offering more versatile phones with fewer components that will ease roaming between networks.  Marvell’s LTE technology is designed to support the highest levels of performance available in the industry today with Category 4 throughputs of 150 Mbps DL (down link), according to the company.

Now all we need is to get those pesky roaming charges down. As a Danish subscriber usuing a Danish phone in the US we pay roughly $20 per MB of data that we consume. And you US guys risk paying roughly the same for data outside of North America.

If only the carriers would understand that lowering prices substantially would actually dramatically increase their revenue.S|A
