SuperTalent launches “ultra-portable” USB 3.0 SSD

Plus questions to ask before purchase

SuperTalent today announced the launch of the Storage POD Mini, a miniature version of the current Storage POD USB 3.0 external SSD offering. The Storage POD Mini is an USB 3.0 external SSD drive that touts 260 MB/s top speed. Coming in 60 GB, 120 GB and 240 GB flavors, the external SSD drive uses the SandForce SSD processor and has a dimension of 110 x 68 x 10 mm, to have “roughly the same size as an internal 2.5” HDD; without the enclosure”, all inside a blue anodized all-aluminum case.

It also has a one-touch backup button, that upon pressing, backs up your data at a maximum write speed of 174 MB/s. The drive itself will also have read/write protection mechanism similar to an SD card to prevent accidental changes to the data in the SSD. The drive is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 machines, so you can still access the drive on machines that don’t come with USB 3.0 ports.

We here at S|A headquarters took a short survey to discover the unanswered questions you, as a potential purchaser might have before buying.  They are listed here in no particular order.  Is it bootable, even onto Linux? Can I install a Windows 7 Ultimate on it and boot my machine with that, how about dual booting? Can it play Crysis 2? And so on.  The decision is yours ladies and gents. S|A
