SD Cards to get hardware encryption

Move your media, maybe

The companies Panasonic, Samsung, SanDisk, Sony and Toshiba are aiming to provide a standard to allow content protection of HD contents on SD Cards.  Currently there is no standards based protection scheme and this means that it is impossible for example to copy a Blu-ray disk to an SD card and watch it on your portable media player or smartphone.

The five companies plan to introduce a common scheme that would allow users to move their content around between various platform and various types of media.

We should expect to see the first product employing the scheme during the last part of next year according to the companies. The solution will use hardware encryption and will be based on a scheme with public/private keys.

Best of all would of course be if we could completely get rid of content protection, but this seems to be very far away. In the meantime it would be a benefit to users if we could move our paid for content around as we please and watch it whenever we like it.

Let’s face it – most of us would prefer to store our content on something a bit more flexible than optical disks that require a bulky drive to play them.S|A
