Intel doesn’t announce 40GbE Fortville cards yet

Cisco Live 2014: Not official but on display

Intel - logoIntel was showing off something rather unexpected at Cisco Live yesterday, a 40Gb NIC. This unnamed and officially unannounced product is based off Fortville silicon and raises the speed bar for the company.

Fortville is the basis for the next generation converged NICs from Intel, and the silicon is capable of 40Gbps throughput. There were 10GbE NICs on display, quad-10GbE NICs, and the aforementioned single port 40GbE cards. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if they can do 4x10Gb, 1x40Gb isn’t all that much of a trick. Expect it to be official soon, likely around the release of Haswell-EP.
