How did AMD take the lead in GPU performance

rtg-logo Radeon AMD logoSo AMD just took the lead in GPU performance with their Radeon 6000 series, how did they do it? There is one key factor that vaulted them in to the lead in SemiAccurate’s eyes, the others are far less important.

If you compare the Radeon 6000 line to the previous 5000s, AMD claims a 30% frequency increase and an overall 54% increase in performance per Watt. This is all on the same 7nm node albeit with more than a year of updates so the architecture is a serious uplift. There are also a number of feature adds that potentially bring the numbers up as well, PCIe4, caching, and more. On top of this there is one other external factor that essentially handed AMD the lead.
