DURING THE USB-IF developer’s conference we had a chat with a representative from Texas Instruments, as the company was demoing various upcoming USB 3.0 solutions, including a USB 3.0 hub design, a USB 3.0 repeater and USB 3.0 to SATA bridge solutions.

IT’S PRETTY INTERESTING what you can find out at the various events you attend as a tech journalist and today we found out about another reason why we’re not seeing USB 3.0 support built into chipsets. From our understanding it has nothing to do with cost or technology problems, as it all comes down to one thing – Intel isn’t ready to move away from the draft USB 3.0 xHCI specification.

A COUPLE OF weeks ago a slide of Gigabyte’s upcoming mini-ITX motherboard leaked on a Taiwanese website, but we can now share with you the exclusive first pictures of the H55N-USB3 motherboard. This is Gigabyte’s first consumer focused mini-ITX board and it’s also the first mini-ITX board to feature USB 3.0 support.

EARLIER TODAY WE had the opportunity to visit MSI and got a sneak peek at its upcoming all-in-one PC system. We’re seeing more and more all-in-one type systems, although we’re still not convinced that these types of machines are set to replace the humble desktop PC. But it’s possible that MSI is heading in the right direction with its new system as an overall entertainment solution.

NVIDIA HAS SOME interesting numbers in its GTX480 presentations, but just like the Heaven benchmark numbers, they don’t seem to reflect reality. This latest ‘accident’ in an official presentation centers around Dirt2.

NVIDIA IS TWISTING the arms of e-tailers over GTX480s, forcing them to clean out the warehouses of old inventory if they want the new cards. If you want any allocations of the GTX470 or GTX480, be prepared to buy lots of low end cards.

BIT-TECH HAS POSTED some early impressions of AMD’s upcoming entry level 880G chipset and the word unimpressed springs to mind. Although the IGP has been renamed Radeon HD 4250, it’s said to offer no performance advantages over the older Radeon HD 3200 IGP of the 780G.

MSI WAS SHOWING off its 890FX board at CeBIT a couple of weeks ago, but we’ve now managed to score the first official pictures of the 890FXA-GD70 board. All we can say is that it looks like MSI has a winner on its hands and this should be worth a look for anyone that’s considering getting one of AMD’s upcoming Phenom II X6 processors.

INTEL IS SAID to be shipping 20 percent more chipsets than CPUs which makes for a fairly skewed ratio, as most users would upgrade their CPU, not their motherboard. In this case though it turns out that it’s the motherboard manufacturers that are hoping for better times and are placing large chipset orders with Intel.
