ALTHOUGH NOT NEARLY as commonplace as P67 motherboards at Computex, we did spot some H67 boards as well. The peculiar thing is, at least as far as we are aware, Intel isn’t planning on doing any LGA-1155 processors without integrated graphics, so having two different chipsets doesn’t make that much sense, but then again, Intel doesn’t always make sense when it comes to product SKUs.

WE DIDN’T FORGET to take some snaps of the P67 boards that were on display at Computex, but rather than doing a post here and there on the various boards, we figured we’d stick them all in one story. Just a word of warning, most of these boards are not the final product and most are mock-ups made for the show and some of them don’t even have the actual chipset fitted.

ONE FLAW WITH USB 3.0 is that you’re stuck with only a pair of ports around the back on your motherboard, but it seems like the motherboard manufacturers are getting ready to solve that problem for you. As we reported a couple of days ago, ASRock and ECS are using an internal pin-header, but both of the boards in question also feature two USB 3.0 host controllers.

ALBATRON IS ONE of those companies that continues to do cool things, but rarely gets much press. Last year they had the best mobo of Computex, this year their big push is into touch screen monitors.

BACK IN MAY we told you about a bridge solution from Chrontel that turns an LVDS signal into a DisplayPort signal and we wondered why DisplayPort was taking such a long time to appear in devices. Apple is the only notebook manufacturer to date to use DisplayPort as well as eDP or Embedded DisplayPort on its entire range of notebooks. Today we got some answers from Chunghwa Picture Tubes.

THERMALTAKE HAD SEVERAL evolutionary cases, fans and docks at Computex, along with one really good new idea. If Thermaltake is a design trendsetter, and they usually are, look forward to cases with lots of HD docking bays. About time.

IT’S TAKEN QUITE some time for Tegra powered devices to turn up in the market, although we spotted an unusual implementation by a company called Yuan High-Tech. The company in question mostly makes PC TV-tuners and surveillance solutions, but was displaying its A-Box mini at Computex which is pretty much a tiny Tegra powered computer.

IT LOOKS LIKE SemiAccurate’s sources were dead on last year when we said that DFI was leaving the consumer motherboard business. It is a sad thing to say, but at this year at Computex, the company had no consumer products to show off at all, only industrial PCs.

ZOTAC QUICKLY GAINED a reputation for making unusual mini-ITX solutions and what was on show at this year’s Computex didn’t change that fact. What was shown behind closed doors is set to push things even further, at least as far as barebones are concerned.

ONE PROBLEM WITH USB 3.0 is that, to date, there’s no common pin-header layout for internal USB 3.0 connectors, but it appears that ASRock and ECS have taken things into their own hands and have come up with a suitable solution. Interestingly the two companies appear to be using exactly the same type of connector, although we don’t know if the pin-out is the same.

THE BEIGE BOX is anything but beige these days and recently there has been a huge trend to make all black cases, including the internals. However, it seems like a new trend is kicking off where case manufacturers are going for white rather than black. SilverStone’s new FT03 Fortress doesn’t go all white, but it’s definitely a case that’s flirting with the new trend.

YOU MIGHT REMEMBER the name Crestatech from last year’s IDF, they are making the first software defined radio. The big news from Computex is that they showed real silicon, real cards, and real software up and running on broadcast TV.
