THE TUF SERIES of motherboards from Asus has always been a product range that we haven’t quite understood, as it makes bold claims about MIL-SPEC tested components and has never struck us as a must have type of motherboard. The latest addition to the TUF series is the Sabtertooth P67 and it adds even more head scratching features, although it’s very possible that we’re not the target market and that’s why we don’t understand Asus’ reasoning.

Brazos performance numbers arrive

Good enough graphics, not quite as good CPU

AMD HAS FINALLY allowed the first benchmarks of its Brazos platform to be published and it’s without a doubt an Atom beater, well, at least the Zacate based E-350 is. As expected the graphics performance is quite good, albeit quite some ways away from AMD’s discrete offerings, however it seems like on the CPU side of things, VIA of all companies have managed to one-up AMD in terms of entry level processor performance.

Nvidia slates tablets, unless they have Tegra 2

But where are Nvidia’s design wins?

DURING THE NVIDIA earnings report yesterday, the company’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang decided it was time to have a go at tablets, well, at least tablets that weren’t built around Nvidia’s Tegra 2 SoC. He also put some of the blame for the delay of Tegra 2 tablets on Google, as Nvidia, Google and the tablet manufacturers wanted to offer products that will be competitive against the iPad at launch.

WE’RE FINALLY GETTING close to AMD’s official unveiling of the Brazos platform and some selected media has already been given a hands-on briefing by AMD, although it seems like we’ll have to wait another week until we get to see any benchmark figures. Even so, it looks like Intel is in for an ass kicking, well, at least at the entry level of the market.

Etron rumoured to get USB-IF certification

The long, slow race to get USB 3.0 certification

ALTHOUGH THERE ARE about half a dozen companies with USB 3.0 host controllers in their product portfolio by now, it appears that getting USB-IF certification is a huge stumbling block. However, Etron is now expecting to be the first of the Taiwanese USB 3.0 host controller makers to pass the scrutiny of the USB-IF and to be allowed to use its certification logo on its products.

Intel takes 22nm FPGA order from Achronix

First step towards becoming a cutting edge foundry?

INTEL IS SPENDING a lot of money on developing its manufacturing processes, although much of this is thanks to the money it makes on its microprocessors and of course some of its other product ranges. However, it now seems like Intel has finally decided to branch out and allow others to have access to its cutting edge manufacturing processes, as Intel has signed a deal with Achronix to make 22nm FPGA’s for the company.
