WE’RE FAIRLY CERTAIN that Intel couldn’t possibly be any more confusing when it comes to its CPU line-ups these days and that’s just the standard desktop parts, but today we’re going to take a closer look at Intel’s Westmere-EX line of Xeon E7 processors. The E7 series of Xeon processors are those that are above the Sandy Bridge-EP socket 2011 parts and they use the older socket 1567, confused yet?

ACER IS JUMPING back into the server market in a big way with the launch of six separate lines of products and a comprehensive support network. This is not just a simple launch, Acer is taking the server market very seriously, intending to mirror their success in laptops and desktops.

AT CES, HITACHI GST was showing off some unique enterprise SSDs, both in terms of form factor and interface. Like most others at CES, Hitachi also showed off a 3TB 7200RPM Deskstar, proving that magnetic drives are still alive and kicking.

WE’VE SEEN MOST, if not all, of Intel’s consumer chipsets for the LGA-1155 platform for this year, but Intel is planning three additional versions of Cougar Point for its E3-series of Xeon processors which shares the same socket. What we’re looking at is the Intel C202, C204 and C206 chipsets, all of which are similar, but quite different to what Intel is offering for its desktop consumer platform.

INTEL IS FINALLY starting to talk about the upcoming Poulson chip, the first real update to the Itanium architecture in years. While the chip may be huge and technically complex, it is hard to see anyone other than die-hard HP big iron shops actually caring.

AS SOON AS a chipmaker announces a new chip, the OEMs and ODMs come out with new products to support that part. In this case, Tyan has a new board and barebones system for the refreshed Opteron 6100 chips.

AMD PUT OUT a speed bump for the Magny-Cours CPUs today, five new chips in all. They aren’t anything huge, just a slight speed increase for the top end Opteron 6100 line.

INTEL’S ROMLEY PLATFORM is set to launch sometime in the second half of this year and it will bring with it a world of confusion in the Xeon market space as Intel will be offering both LGA-1356 and LGA-2011 solutions to its partners. The main difference is that the LGA-1356 platform will support triple channel memory while the LGA-2011 platform will support quad channel memory, but it doesn’t stop there.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING to get yourself a new system in the near future, then you might want to consider investing in a motherboard sooner rather than later as the price of motherboards are expected to rise by somewhere between five and 10 percent, or maybe even more in the next few months. AFTER SEVERAL RUMOURS and a lot of speculation we’ve managed to get our hands on what should be close to final specifications of Intel’s Patsburg chipset for its LGA-2011 processors and this is also what the X68 chipset will be based off, although today we’ll be specifically looking at Intel’s solutions for Xeon processors. Intel will launch no less than four different SKUs for Patsburg for its Xeon platform alone, not counting the X68 chipset.

It’s hard to believe that OnLive launched a little over 6 months ago in June of 2010. Well they are still around, and have launched a few new products along the way including an announcement that they have partnered with Vizio to include their software inside of certain newly released “VIA Plus” series TV sets. We stopped by their booth to see how the second half of 2010 treated them, and what they are focusing on going forward.
