CONTRAST RATIO FOR displays is one of the most over hyped features these days. Most manufacturers use what is known as dynamic contrast ratio which is anything but an accurate figure of the actual contrast ratio of your display. However, AU Optronics was showing off some interesting high contrast displays at Display Taiwan earlier today that could be set to change the market.

THERMALTAKE HAD SEVERAL evolutionary cases, fans and docks at Computex, along with one really good new idea. If Thermaltake is a design trendsetter, and they usually are, look forward to cases with lots of HD docking bays. About time.

PIXEL QI HAD some of their screens on display at Computex, and a chat with some of their engineers shed a lot of light on not just what they do but how. The screens may be made on the same tools as mainstream LCDs, but they are far from ordinary.

YOU MIGHT REMEMBER the name Crestatech from last year’s IDF, they are making the first software defined radio. The big news from Computex is that they showed real silicon, real cards, and real software up and running on broadcast TV.

PASSIVELY COOLED GRAPHCIS cards are underrated in our opinion and we’d like to see more fanless graphics cards. Mostly low-end cards are passively cooled and others are down clocked and use slower, cheaper memory. Not so with Sapphire’s latest addition which is a passively cooled Radeon HD 5670.

VIA HAD A lot of goodies to show off at Computex, from USB to ARM to dual core Nanos. On top of it all, they had several of the buzzworthy ‘$100 tablets’ to show off.

INTEL DIDN’T HAVE much to announce at Computex as far as new products go, but they did offer a peek into the future. Sandy Bridge, Oak Trail, and Canoe Lake were things bandied about at Dadi Perlmutter’s keynote.

A YEAR AGO, AMD showed off the first Evergreen part, it was a Juniper wafer and a card behind the scenes. Tomorrow morning, Taiwan time, a few birds told us that AMD will be showing off Fusion silicon.

COMPUTEX IS ALWAYS full of surprises, but Asus’s new Immensity motherboard which is part of its R.O.G. series of boards is something that we didn’t expect to see. It’s based on Intel’s X58 chipset and has all the usual trimmings you’d expect on such a board, with two unusual additions – Lucid’s Hydra and an onboard ATI GPU with dedicated graphics memory.

IT LOOKS LIKE the GTX480M notebooks are floating, just like we said at CeBIT, and at Computex, they are the highlight of the Clevo booth. While the performance may not impress many enthusiasts, several of their other designs just might.
