IT’S VERY POSSIBLE that tablets are finally getting to the stage where they’ll deliver what have been promised for so long and HP looks set to be close to front of the pack if details of its new tablets prove to hold true. Full specs of its 9.7-inch webOS tablet currently codenamed Topaz has leaked and it has just about everything a good tablet should have.

GLOBAL FOUNDRIES HAD the second keynote at the Common Platform alliance conference Tuesday, the topic was manufacturing. Chia Song Hwee, COO of Global Foundries went into more details about what the alliance is doing to make chips, and how they were planning to work together for the benefit of their customers.

THE COMMON PLATFORM alliance, Global Foundries, IBM and Samsung had a conference Tuesday to announce their renewed alliance and show off their respective wares. Samsung’s NS Woo, President and GM of the LSI Division kicked it off in the first of three keynotes.

THERE ISN’T MUCH that we didn’t already know about Sapphire’s new P67 after our brief encounter with the board at Intel’s Sandy Bridge launch in Taiwan, but the final version cleaned up pretty good and it got it’s retail name, Pure Black P67. The design remained mostly the same, although the final board has now been fitted with some slightly unusual cooling which makes the board stand out from the competition.

IT’S LESS THAN two weeks since Intel officially unveiled its new Sandy Bridge range of processors and retail notebooks are already hitting the (online)stores en masse. However, it seems to be a bit of an odd launch, as we’re mostly seeing high-end 15.6-inch models with only a handful of smaller models being available so far.

WE’D ALMOST FORGOTTEN about this one, but we scored some pictures of Gigabyte’s final revision of the GA-H67N-USB3 mini-ITX board which have been fitted with the same style heatsink as its other H67 and P67 boards. It’s also the first H67 board we’ve seen that sports twin HDMI ports, making for some interesting usage scenarios.

SO FAR WE’VE looked a range of motherboards for Intel’s new Sandy Bridge processors and the last of the boards this time around is the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD7 which is at least for the time being, Gigabyte’s top of the line model. It packs just about every feature you could possibly want and then some, although it has a price to match these features.

AMD HAS MANAGED to drum up a lot of support for its Brazos platform and as of today Fujitsu and Sony has joined the growing group of notebook makers with Brazos powered machines, as both companies have announced 11.6-inch models in Japan. Neither model is available as of yet, but both companies will have their models in the shops within the next two to three weeks.

Talk about a wild start to the week. Between the Intel/Nvidia settlement, Verizon’s announcement to flog Apple kit, recovering from a week in Vegas at CES, and now Dirk Meyer’s abrupt departure from AMD the tech press has been without sleep for quite some time. With the industry in such a chaotic state it can be hard to see what the future holds for all these companies, so let us peer into S|A’s patent pending crystal ball to see what’s in store for AMD.

ABOUT TWO MONTHS ago, we said that Intel and Nvidia had settled their patent suit, and it was going to end up with about $1 billion going to Nvidia. Yesterday it was officially announced with the tab rising to around $1.5 billion.
