MOST ANDROID PHONES are much the same these days in terms of features, but it seems like Acer has decided to take the plunge and come up with something a little bit unusual with its next gen model, as it’ll feature a 4.8-inch screen with a 1024×480 resolution. However, that’s unlikely to be the only selling point of this yet-to-be-named-handset that should launch at an unspecified date.

AMD DID MENTION that it wanted a slice of the tablet market and it seems like this is happening sooner rather than later, as Acer has announced that it will be launching an AMD powered tablet sometime in February next year. At the same time the company announced that it’s readying two Android tablets, both powered by ARM and all three tablets are said to have dual core processors.

OVER THE PAST couple of years we’ve seen several dual-screen notebook mock-ups and the odd prototype here and there, but it wasn’t until earlier this year when Toshiba launched its limited edition Libretto W100 that the first dual screen notebook arrived. However, the Libretto W100 only had a pair of 10-inch screens and Acer has just announced its dual 14-inch screen touting Iconia Touchbook which not only offers larger screens, but also more potent hardware inside.

EARLIER TODAY WE attended a presentation by Edgar Figueroa, the CEO of the Wi-Fi Alliance where he presented the benefits of Wi-Fi direct and a little bit about Wi-Fi in general. He also highlighted some future developments in Wi-Fi technology, of which at least two are bringing something interesting to the table.

AMD HAS FINALLY allowed the first benchmarks of its Brazos platform to be published and it’s without a doubt an Atom beater, well, at least the Zacate based E-350 is. As expected the graphics performance is quite good, albeit quite some ways away from AMD’s discrete offerings, however it seems like on the CPU side of things, VIA of all companies have managed to one-up AMD in terms of entry level processor performance.

DURING THE NVIDIA earnings report yesterday, the company’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang decided it was time to have a go at tablets, well, at least tablets that weren’t built around Nvidia’s Tegra 2 SoC. He also put some of the blame for the delay of Tegra 2 tablets on Google, as Nvidia, Google and the tablet manufacturers wanted to offer products that will be competitive against the iPad at launch.

THIN AND LIGHT notebooks are all the rage at the moment, especially after Apple’s launch of the new Macbook Air. Well, it seems like Lenovo has decided to make its own thin and light model in the shape of the 12.5-inch IdeaPad U260, a fairly modest looking notebook in comparison, but it has a few strengths of its own.

DELL’S UPCOMING ALIENWARE M17x R3 has leaked and with it that AMD is getting ready to launch the first of its new 6000-series of mobile GPU’s. Not much is known about the new Mobility Radeon 6000-series, but the first two models are rumoured to be the Mobility Radeon HD 6870 and 6970.

HANDS UP EVERYONE that remembers that VIA still makes x86 processors. Ok, so that might’ve been a little bit mean, but VIA is often forgotten when x86 processors are being discussed, although with the introduction of its first dual core Nano CPU sometime in early 2011, this might change, at least to a degree.
