THE DESPERATION AT Nvidia has reached silly proportions, with the paper launch of the GTX580 pulled in from ‘Cayman Day’ to ‘Investor Conference Call Day’, both holidays in November. I wonder how many reviewers will overlook the fact that there won’t be cards this year?

FOR THOSE OF you that are looking for something a bit exotic – in terms of your next graphics card upgrade – then Zotac’s dual GeForce GTX 460 card might be what you’ve been waiting for. This dual GF104 card isn’t Nvidia’s rumoured GTX 490, by any means, but this is all a custom design by Zotac.

AMD TOOK THE worst possible route in naming their new 68×0 cards, and the explanations for it only make things worse. No, scratch that, it isn’t the worst possible route, but it does destroy a long standing and well thought out convention.

TODAY, AMD IS launching two new cards from it’s Northern Islands family of GPUs, the HD6850 and HD6870. These cards, based on the ‘Barts’ chip are both mid-range players that will redefine mainstream performance and devastate Nvidia’s margins.

NVIDIA SEEMS TO be worried that AMD’s Radeon HD 6800 cards are going to be too competitive in terms of price/performance compared to some of its line-up and as such the company has today revised its pricing on a couple of its models. Both the 1GB GeForce GTX 460 and the GTX 470 have had their prices cut to make them more competitive, all of which is good news for the consumers.

WITH MOST COMPUTER displays these days using 16:9 panels it’s refreshing to see that Samsung has decided to launch a pair of good old fashioned 16:10 displays, both sporting DisplayPort interfaces to boot. They might be intended for business use, but we can see a fair few consumers being interested in these new models as well.

NVIDIA IS CONTINUING to launch new GeForce 400 series cards, although this time it’s the OEM partners that are getting new cards in the shape of the GeForce GT 440 and a slightly different GTS 450. The two cards don’t appear to be all that different once you start reading the specifications, which makes us wonder what Nvidia is playing at.

ONE THING THAT so far has been missing from AMD’s repertoire is a 3D monitor, or rather support from a monitor maker despite the fact that AMD has been able to do 3D for quite some time. This has all changed now thanks to ViewSonic and its new V3D241wm-LED 3D display which has been designed specifically to work with AMD graphics cards.

IT SEEMS LIKE AMD decided to call its Barts GPUs Radeon HD 6800 after all, at least according to the latest leak. Barts XT will be the Radeon HD 6870 while the Barts Pro will be the Radeon HD 6850, neither of which is a big surprise once you’ve established which series the two GPUs fall into.
