Sub $400 price point confirmed

THE GEFORCE 570 isn’t expected to launch until next week Tuesday, but pricing of the new cards are already starting to leak out around the world. The price spread seems to be quite wide depending on the model and how much the card in question has been overclocked, although considering the price premium; it might make more sense to overclock the card on your own.

Rambus lawyers bored… decide to sue the world

Vein in JHH’s head sets new protrusion record

In the spirit of the season, Rambus Inc. is giving out another round of subpoenas to all of its friends in the tech industry.  Most interesting among the defendants perhaps is nVidia, who only months ago signed a licensing agreement with Rambus to end an ITC blockade of its products, (virtually their whole portfolio), which infringed on Rambus’s patents.  Round 2, or 3, or 400ish… Ding!

One for desktop CPU’s, one with onboard mobile CPU

Asus unveils three new U-series notebooks

The U31, U36 and U41

EARLIER TODAY WE attended the launch of three new U-series notebooks from Asus and with the U-series being Asus’ “super mobility” series of notebooks, our expectations were set fairly high, especially after yesterday’s leak of the U36. To be fair, the U36 didn’t disappoint in the flesh, but the other two models, the U31 and U41 are fairly run-of-the-mill models considering the category Asus has placed them in.

IBM says “FU” to electrons, “Shalom!” to photons in chip design

Multi-core chips to see the light

If IBM has its way, QPI and HyperTransport are about to look about as fast as your mom’s 56K modem.  It seems that copper interconnects are simply not good enough anymore, and IBM researchers have developed a way to incorporate nano-scale CMOS optical devices onto the same slab of silicon your old-and-busted electron based transistors are fabbed on.  This allows chips to use pulses of light to communicate with each other rather than electrical signals to achieve some mind boggling bandwidth numbers.

Still not a lot of details of what’s to come

FOR THOSE OF you that are fans of Intel’s own brand motherboards and that are waiting to upgrade their system until Sandy Bridge launches, we can today unveil some of Intel’s upcoming consumer level motherboards. Nokia and others seek to make smart phones less stupid

George Orwell tosses and turns in his grave

For all the marvelous feats that modern “smart” phones can perform, I am constantly amazed by the constant stupidity of my own handset.  Why, for instance, is there no option to disable the ringer during a calendar event for a class or meeting?  Why does it tell me I have 300,000 updates to install and not give me a single button to “Install All”?  Why does it not have a telescoping handle and constant vibrate mode for impromptu back-rubs? Luckily it would appear that Nokia and other developers for iToys and RoboPhones are working on fixing at least some of these important issues.

Acer’s Revo RL100 marries AMD CPU and ION graphics

An unholy mix that somehow works

ACER IS A COMPANY that isn’t shy to mix and match things when it comes to its computers, but its latest addition to the Revo family of low power computers is something that made us take notice when we saw the spec at a quick hands on earlier today, It’s got an AMD Athlon II Neo CPU and Nvidia ION graphics. Sadly we didn’t have too much time to play with the media centric system, but we did manage to snap a few shots of it.

CF Association moves from SATA to PCIe

For some reason, no one seems to care

IT LOOKS LIKE the CFast cards we exclusively showed you last spring are actually dead, the CF association didn’t deem 300MBps fast enough. Instead, they went with a newer spec that will hit 500MBps. Unfortunately, it is still a compact flash card, so no one really cares.

Fresco Logic launches the FL1009 USB 3.0 host controller

We sit down for a chat with the CTO

ALTHOUGH FRESCO LOGIC is still a USB-IF certification short of a sellable product, the company has finally launched its two port xHCI 1.0 FL1009 USB 3.0 host controller. Earlier today we had a chance to sit down for a chat with Bob McVay, the CTO of Fresco Logic and he gave us an insight into Fresco Logic and why it has taken so long time to bring this product to market, among many things.
