16:10 screens for business use

WITH MOST COMPUTER displays these days using 16:9 panels it’s refreshing to see that Samsung has decided to launch a pair of good old fashioned 16:10 displays, both sporting DisplayPort interfaces to boot. They might be intended for business use, but we can see a fair few consumers being interested in these new models as well.

Apple launches new MacBook Air

Starts at $999, but you’ll want to spend more

AS EXPECTED, APPLE has launched its new MacBook Air, well, the company actually launched two new models, a 13.3-inch model, as well as an 11.6-inch model. As rumoured, both models comes with an SSD instead of a hard drive, but sadly Apple decided to stick with the Core 2 platform rather than move the MacBook Air to Intel’s Core i processors.

Renesas working on two new USB 3.0 host controllers

Will arrive in Q1 2011

WE’RE STILL WAITING for the USB 3.0 host controller “war” to start, but after speaking with Renesas at TFE 2010 it looks like the company is already preparing for what will come. We also confirmed that Renesas is indeed working with AMD to help implement USB 3.0 support in its future chipsets.

Nvidia launches GeForce GT 440

Only for OEM’s, alongside new GTS 450

NVIDIA IS CONTINUING to launch new GeForce 400 series cards, although this time it’s the OEM partners that are getting new cards in the shape of the GeForce GT 440 and a slightly different GTS 450. The two cards don’t appear to be all that different once you start reading the specifications, which makes us wonder what Nvidia is playing at.

New MacBook Air expected this week

Leaked pre-production pictures tell a story

THIS WEEKEND A PICTURE of Apple’s purported upcoming MacBook Air turned up online and it looks like Apple has done some serious work on its new wafer thin notebook. Ok, so it’s not actually wafer thin, but the new MacBook Air, which is expected to launch during an Apple event on the 20th, is said to be not much thicker than a USB port, not counting the lid of course.

ViewSonic launches 3D monitor for AMD graphics cards

ONE THING THAT so far has been missing from AMD’s repertoire is a 3D monitor, or rather support from a monitor maker despite the fact that AMD has been able to do 3D for quite some time. This has all changed now thanks to ViewSonic and its new V3D241wm-LED 3D display which has been designed specifically to work with AMD graphics cards.

Common Platform Alliance key to foundry success

THE ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT back in June seems to have been generally missed, possibly because most of us aren’t familiar with the Common Platform Alliance, an organization striving for a common, open design ecosystem and fab synchronization, amongst other things. Global Foundries, IBM, and Samsung are the key foundries that make up the Common Platform Alliance and they’re all currently working on a joint 28nm process technology platform which will make life easier for their customers.
